Herbs, in general, like to be grown in full sun. they prefer well drained soil with a moderate amount of organic matter added. If the soil is too "rich" and/or too much fertilizer is applied, they may look great for a while, but will not produce the best amount of essential oils. However, as with almost all things in the plant world, there are exceptions……..Most herbs that are grown to be cut several times through the growing season (ie. Basil, chives, coriander etc.) will benefit from a little extra water, fertilizer and soil amending.
Herbs are also great to grow scattered throughout the perennial garden as many make terrific ornamentals.
